about
The Mexico City band Mengers is ready to drop a new album by previewing it via the track “i/O,” demonstrating their sonic evolution. The forthcoming full-length effort, also titled i/O, is one of the most anticipated efforts in the Mexican rock scene.
Parting from the destructive musical freneticism that helped them garner critical acclaim with their previous work, GOLLY, i/O—pronounced “eeh oh”—introduces a new approach to their musical proposal, leading them to reach a whole new artistic level. Their sound remains exciting and energetic, yet a new sense of dynamics, cleaness and melody give us a different side to what we previously knew about Mengers.
About the song, the band says in a statement: “After living in a pandemic for more than a year and a half, every day has become an endless repetition. Our daily routines have turned incredibly monotonous. It has resulted in a paradoxical situation; we have always sought loneliness and isolation yet we never wanted to lose family and friends or remain in a constant state of vigilance in the face of an uncertain future. It has been both the best and worst time of our lives. Life has become a switch we’re not sure if it’s on or off; perhaps the switch is both on and off at the same time. Life doesn’t deal in absolutes: happiness implies the existence of sadness, and sadness hides happiness in itself. Nothing is unique. ‘i/O’ denounces those preconceptions. We’re in the best worst place in our lives and it’s both shitty and grandiose.”
Like GOLLY, i/O was produced and recorded by Hugo Quezada (Robota, Exploded View) at his Progreso Nacional studios in Mexico City, where albums by El Shirota, Belafonte Sensacional, Diles Que No Me Maten, and many more have been recorded. Thematically, the songs on the album will explore internal struggles and the process of emotional depuration catalyzed through the lens of the pandemic.
Released in 2020, GOLLY saw the band—brothers Carlos (guitar) and Pablo (drums) Calderón, as well as bassist Mauricio Suárez—dug deep into existential questions of life through simple and direct lyrics, as well as their relationship with their surroundings. Their exhilarating approach to guitar music made them a hit in the Mexican rock scene, getting accolades like naming GOLLY as one of the best albums of the year by publications like Indie Rocks!, Me Hace Ruido, Universo Disonante, and others; while their song “Pantitlán” landed on CDMX’s most popular rock radio station Reactor’s best songs of 2020 countdown at number 25. As the band has not been able to promote GOLLY in concert due to the pandemic, they instead recorded a live session, GOLLY: Mengers En Vivo Squash 73, that has resulted in more coverage for the band as well as an expansion of their fanbase.
To promote i/O, Mengers will be sharing a session for renowned Seattle radio station KEXP as part of their Latin America special programming, Aquí y Ahora, to be published on October 11, as well as an appearance on Festival Hipnosis in Mexico City along with La Femme, Monolord, Fuzz, La Luz, Diles Que No Me Maten, and more.
i/O marks a new era for Mengers, inarguably one of the most exciting rock bands in Mexico right now. The full album will be available in the summer of 2022.
